The Cutting Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023

The Cutting Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz 2023

This single vineyard Barossa Shiraz opens with bright aromas of blueberry and raspberry, layered with earthy undertones and a subtle hint of aniseed. The palate is fresh and finely balanced, with bright natural acidity and soft, juicy tannins that give the wine a modern, finessed expression of Barossa Shiraz rather than overt weight or heaviness.

The fruit comes from the Cutting Vineyard, a hilltop site in the highly regarded Stone Well sub region. Sitting at elevation with a moderate north easterly aspect, the vineyard benefits from cooling south easterly winds that provide relief during the peak heat of the growing season. These conditions help preserve freshness and aromatic lift while allowing the fruit to ripen evenly.

Soils at the site are complex and varied, with red sandstone scattered with buckshot ironstone over a limestone base of rock and schist. This layered soil profile contributes depth, structure and a distinctive mineral complexity to the wine. Planted in the late 1990s, the vineyard has been meticulously hand tended for more than two decades, with each vine managed to produce fruit that clearly reflects the Stone Well character.

The 2023 vintage followed favourable winter conditions and a largely moderate growing season. Careful vineyard management and a steady ripening period allowed the fruit to develop flavour and balance while retaining natural freshness, resulting in a refined and composed style.

The fruit was hand picked from the single vineyard and cold soaked to build colour and flavour before fermentation in open top fermenters, with a small proportion of whole bunches included to enhance freshness and complexity. The wine was basket pressed to seasoned French oak and matured to allow integration and texture to develop. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it retains purity, energy and site expression.

The result is an expressive single vineyard Shiraz with clarity of fruit, savoury detail and fine structure, finishing long and fresh, and offering a clear sense of place.
