Te Mata Estate Gamay Noir

Te Mata Estate’s Gamay Noir is a bright, energetic wine that delivers sheer drinkability with enough complexity to keep things interesting. Often viewed as the younger sibling in the Te Mata family, this Gamay is anything but simple. It’s a vibrant, aromatic red made with precision, offering freshness, perfume and subtle structure in every glass.

In the glass, the wine shines with a youthful ruby-crimson hue. Aromatically, it is immediately charming. Juicy red cherry, pomegranate and cranberry are layered with hints of violet, sweet spice and just a flicker of cracked pepper. There is a floral lift and purity of fruit that makes it hard to resist.

The palate is light to medium-bodied, silky and incredibly bright. The fruit character is fresh and expressive, with redcurrant and sour cherry driving the profile. A touch of savoury spice and earth grounds the wine, while a fine acid line gives it definition and energy. Tannins are gentle but present, offering just enough grip to add shape without interrupting the flow.

Made with a portion of carbonic maceration, the wine shows that classic Beaujolais-style bounce and aromatic lift, but with the added precision and polish that defines the Te Mata approach. It is a playful wine in the best sense of the word, yet still grounded in serious winemaking.

Oak is virtually absent on the palate, letting the fruit lead with clarity and charm. There is a sense of restraint that keeps the wine vibrant and focused. It is best served slightly chilled, where the acidity and floral aromatics come alive.

Gamay Noir is still relatively rare in New Zealand, but Te Mata has been a quiet pioneer of the variety. With each vintage, the wine gains a little more refinement, and in 2024, it feels fully at ease. This is not just a curiosity but a confident expression of site, variety and winemaking intent.

Te Mata Gamay Noir is best enjoyed young, ideally over the next two to three years. It is a natural fit with charcuterie, grilled salmon, duck, or a lazy long lunch in the sun.
